Allison Stokke and Alyce Caron
Allison Stokke, born in Newport Beach, California on 22 March 1989, is among America's most famous and wealthiest Pole Vaulters. She began her career as a pole-jumper in 2007 after a picture taken at a track meet when she was 17. Instagram as well as Twitter are among her most liked social media sites. She is well known as a track and field athlete similar to Jessica Ennis Hill. In the Los Angeles Times, among other media outlets, stated that Stokke has not aspired to or sought this kind of attention. The authors of their work Technology Power and Culture in the Network Society Brett Hutchins and David Rowe linked Stokke's case with the case of American soccer players Alex Morgan and Hope Solo female athletes who were fetishized and saw their public image as sexually distorted in a manner which, according to the authors, diminished their sporting achievements. In relation to Stokke they also observed the fact that online comments generally regarded as offensive in nature and blamed the sexualization process to the women. Many others made parallels to Brandi Chastain's joy at winning the 1999 FIFA World Cup Women's Final wearing a sports bra where women's sports events were often dominated by discussions of their looks. A reporter who was on a Californian site that covers track and field captured photos of Stokke in New York at the beginning of 2007. Images were shared online. With Leather, a popular site for sports that boasts many male readers, re-posted the photo in May under the title Pole Vaulting Is Sexy Barely legal. Matt Ufford had threatened to take action against the photographer for failing to removal of the picture. However, the news story had popular and received much attention. Stokke became the focus of a site dedicated to her, which featured several photos of Stokke competing in pole vault. The images were quickly shared through social media and online fan clubs, attracting thousands of people.
