Madekwe was born South London, England into an ethnically diverse family. The mother of her child is English and her father is Nigerian. She was raised in a council estate in the south of London. At the age 14she enrolled in The Brit School. She earned her BA in acting at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She appeared on stage in several productions as a student including the role of King Henry V, as Princess Katherine and Wuthering Heights, as Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe began her acting career in the film Storm Damage. In the years since, she's had guest appearances for Teachers, Doctors Casualty Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe's debut film role was Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream (2007), alongside Colin Farrell. Following this acclaim, she was cast as Elisha in her role on the BBC Three drama pilot West 10 LDN and was featured in six episodes Trexx as well as Flipside. In 2008, she was offered the Bambi character on ITV2 Drama series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Madekwe was in two series, 2 and 3. Madekwe also starred as the title character in How to lose friends & betray people, which was released by Sony Pictures Entertainment back in 2008. A couple of her credits on stage are Little Sweet Thing (by Roy Williams) and Flight Path (by David Watson).
Madekwe was officially introduced to her US debut with The Beautiful Life in 2009. The show ran just two episodes at The CW, and was later removed from the air. Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actor who was raised by an extended family. She was born to Roy and Patty Leggat.
