RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her performance skills, political stance and a talent for rhyme. When she was 8 years older when she was eight, a Muslim cousin gave her the nickname Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing in the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in the production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was a catalyst; she was in touch with the school and with the music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J. Mark the 45 King to perform at a school dance.
