
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine, a laboratory technician and John Ormond, a stockbroker. She is the second of five children born to her parents. Her first appearances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted the attention of many. Then she attended Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After a single year of arts college, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Her graduation was in 1988. Ormond first came to prominence on British television in the 1989 serial Traffik. This show focused on the illegal heroin trade which was carried out from the middle of the East up to Europe. Ormond was the heroin-addicted kid of the lead character, an Home Office minister working to combat heroin importation. This early role won glowing reviews.
